Heute so: Migration von TrueNAS CORE -> TrueNAS SCALE bei einem Kunden.
Also quasi der komplette Server – Daten, VMs, das volle Programm.
Wir reden hier immerhin von einem Wechsel von #FreeBSD nach #Linux, was auch eine komplette Änderung des genutzten VM Stacks bedeutet (BHYVE -> KVM)!

Der Plan war simpel: #ZFS-Replikation auf die neue Kiste, Snapshots inklusive. Nach ein paar Anpassungen liefen die VMen einfach wieder an. Einziger manueller Kraftaufwand: Netzwerkschnittstellen – der Klassiker bei jedem Umzug.
Ohne den wär's fast verdächtig glatt gelaufen.

Und mal ehrlich: #ZFS ist bei so was wirklich ein Geschenk des Himmels.
Was woanders ein schweißtreibendes Kopier-Karussell mit Bangen um die Daten wäre, ist mit ZFS-Replikation eher ein gemütliches:

• Replizieren
• Kaffee holen
• Anpassen, starten, fertig

Und falls ihr vor so einem Umzug steht und euch nicht so recht traut: Meldet euch einfach bei mir. Egal ob CORE zu SCALE, ein ganzes NAS oder nur eine kleine ZFS-Frage – ich helfe gerne. Wer noch auf CORE hängt: Die Migration auf SCALE ist weniger dramatisch, als man denkt. Versprochen!

Okay, now this is getting interesting... I admit I haven't tried Linux on my T490s in quite a while, after my earlier attempts to get the built-in 5G modem to work failed.

Following yesterday’s controversy over why, in my attempt to boycott U.S. products and services, I’d choose Microsoft over Fedora of all things (because, as I said, I need Windows for work—just like any other common operating system), I installed a different SSD today just for fun and put the latest beta of Fedora 45 on it. And look at that: the modem works with it! Quite obviously, the kernel finally has the necessary drivers built in.

So now I can use Linux on the ThinkPad again, even if it’s a Linux distribution under IBM’s umbrella… at the end of the day, it’s still a bit better than Microsoft. And so the only Windows device still running is the NUC—that’s more than enough.

Am Mittwoch, 21.10.2026 um 19:30 Uhr geht unsere Hubzilla-Workshop-Reihe weiter.

Ich persönlich finde dieses Theme richtig spannend und für Hubzilla nahezu unschlagbar gut. Es wirkt modern, aufgeräumt und bietet viele Möglichkeiten, Hubzilla optisch ganz anders zu erleben. Wer Hubzilla bisher nur mit den klassischen Themes kennt, dürfte überrascht sein, wie anders sich die Oberfläche mit Solidified anfühlen kann. 😊

There are decisions you don’t like to make — and you like implementing them even less. Take choosing an operating system, for example. Unfortunately, it’s not very productive to insist on open-source systems if they don’t work flawlessly on your own hardware.

Take, for example, my new Asus NUC 16 Pro with an Intel Ultra X7 processor and its built-in (soldered) components. The only Linux distribution that runs smoothly on it is Fedora. However, for political reasons (the U.S.), I no longer want to use it (although, from a user’s perspective, I do miss it—it’s simply the best Linux, period). But I haven’t been able to get U.S.-independent distributions like Debian to run properly on it; in some cases, the system wasn’t even recognized when I tried installing them from a USB drive. Another new experience… but then again, I’ve never had such relatively brand-new hardware that also requires a cutting-edge kernel. Maybe Ubuntu would work, but I don’t like Ubuntu or Canonical. That’s why I’m running Windows 11 Pro on it. Reluctantly, but everything works.

The same goes for my old ThinkPad T490s. Everything works wonderfully with any Linux distribution—except for the 5G modem. And I need that when I’m on the go. There’s no workaround for it either; I’ve probably scoured the entire web for one, but not a single tip helped. So here, too: Windows...

Now I actually have two Windows computers running again, for the sake of my sanity and to save time. At least I’m using only local accounts and the strictest possible privacy settings and tweaks you can apply to Windows. And I only use those two computers when necessary.

Most of my work continues to run on my two Debian systems, the FreeBSD computer, and, when necessary, on the Mac as well.

Still, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I don’t want to let the devices sit around unused.

Is it just me, or are there others who feel torn like this???

Dutch bank ABN Amro (one of the big 3) is at risk of being hit by US sanctions, because of services it provides to the ICC.

Worst case scenario ABN AMRO would be excluded from the international banking system, which would be the "corporate death penalty" and has already caused another bank, the Amsterdam Trade Bank, to go under.

Broadcom, an American company, are telling Europeans not to use #OpenSource to achieve #TechSovereignty, due to the risk of "depending on Open Source maintainers", and instead tells you to *checks notes* use their proprietary solutions, the same proprietary solutions they recently locked users into, then increased the price by 1000%.

I applaud their audacity.

Open Source prevents you from being locked in and extorted. That same lock-in is Broadcom's business model.

Amsterdam police seized a server belonging to Autistici/Inventati (A/I) from a data center at Amsterdam Science Park, acting on a US legal assistance request. Police digital experts are making an image of the drive, which goes straight to the US.

A/I spent 25 years providing free web hosting and email to about 20,000 left-wing and anti-capitalist groups. In August the US branded it a terrorist organization.

I just came across Omarchy Mobile, an experimental project that brings native Linux to the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

Instead of Android, it runs Arch Linux ARM with a mainline Linux kernel, Hyprland and a touch-friendly interface based on Omarchy.

What's already working? GPU acceleration, the 120 Hz display, touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth audio, NFC, GPS and fingerprint unlocking.

But there's still a long way to go. Calls, SMS and mobile data aren't working yet, so it's not ready to replace your everyday phone.

Still, it's fascinating to see how far Linux can go on smartphone hardware.

A huge crowd around Rosanna

Seit heute bin ich zufriedener User von Rust Desk zum Fernsteuern anderer Geräte wie Server, PCs oder Smartphones.

Somit habe ich kein Bedarf mehr nach AnyDesk, das nur noch eine Verbindung von 5 Minuten erlaubt und danach die Verbindung abbricht.

Ich betreibe ohnehin einen VPS-Server und nun habe ich dort einen RustDesk-Server als Docker Container installiert. Alles funktioniert ohne Limits. Super gut!

"FreeBSD is only for servers" needs to be permanently retired.

Running FreeBSD 15.1 on the trusty ThinkPad T480, and the desktop experience is outright sublime:

- Idle power draw: hovering at an absurd ~2.0W package power
- Wi-Fi: 802.11ax rock-solid
- Hardware video acceleration: fully working in both Firefox and Chrome
- Webcam and audio: working flawlessly
- Productivity: Xfce 4.20 on X11 flying along on ZFS
- Yes, even Factorio runs like a dream

Between the battery efficiency, sane base system, and native ZFS, this machine feels faster and quieter than it has in years.

2026 really is the year of the BSD desktop.

New on the blog: ArtCraft is rebuilding Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, Word, Excel and more in Rust, with AI coding agents.

I tried it. PhotoCraft actually handled my video thumbnails, apps start in 1-2 seconds, and there are native #FreeBSD builds.

The more interesting part: GUI, CLI and agents drive the same engine. And when code gets cheap, verification becomes the bottleneck.

After a few weeks with Debian Stable, I decided yesterday to switch to Debian Testing after all. On more modern computers, it really does make a difference whether I have kernel 6.3 or 7.2 available or can use significantly more up-to-date packages.

Last month I also played around with Debian Sid, and it was absolutely stable for me, though the constant updates—often several times a day—were annoying. So Testing is the perfect compromise for me.

Let me just say this: I still consider Fedora to be the best Linux distribution from a technical standpoint—the absolute gold standard. But unfortunately, in 2026, the world looks like this: Fedora = Red Hat = IBM = Big Tech = USA = Trump. And I absolutely don’t want to use anything from Trump’s shithole country anymore.
