I just checked mine and noticed that the #Bastille jails exports had stopped all because I wasn't passing the --live option. All fixed now but still that could have been a disaster for me.

Today, the Linuxulator did its job, and it did it very well.
A client is experimenting with moving from Docker to FreeBSD and jails, and they seem very happy with it so far.
The issue is that part of their build process - as so often happens - relies on Node dependencies that only compile on Linux, macOS, etc., but not on FreeBSD, due to a missing binary that isn't provided for it. Currently, they build on their local machines and push the output to the server, but sometimes they need to make quick changes on the fly.

So, I set up a Linux jail (Ubuntu) using BastilleBSD, installed the dependencies, set up a bind mount, and granted them access to the jail. The result: now they can compile right from there too, improving their overall workflow.

The Linuxulator - and even more so, illumos's lx zones - are truly remarkable pieces of technology.

this lets you set the preferred source IP address for outgoing packets via a particular route, overriding the default source selection logic.

it's particularly useful for IPv4-over-IPv6 routing; previously, BSD required assigning an IPv4 /32 to every interface for this to work properly; now, you can simply set the IPv4 loopback address as the preferred source.

it's also useful in situation where the router has multiple IPv6 addresses and you want to select which is used, similar to the "net.inet.icmp.reply_src=lo0" sysctl for IPv4 (but it affects all outgoing connections, not just ICMP errors).

it's also useful for IPv4 when you want to control this per-route rather than globally, especially if you're routing in multiple FIBs.

basically, it's really useful for a lot of situations and i'd love to see it land, so please help test it.

it is compatible with the Linux netlink API and works out of the box with BIRD (krt_prefsrc attribute).

the main patch is this one: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D58294 - either use the 'download raw diff' link, or use 'git arc patch D58294' to apply it to a tree.

Heute erstes Setback bei der #FreeBSD Nutzung. Bei meinen Online Spanischunterricht hat die Plattform das Mikrofon nicht erkannt. Zuvor hatte ich es mit BigBlueButton getestet, da klappte es, aber diese proprietäre Plattform wollte nicht. Musste dann erstmal wieder auf den Linux-Laptop zurückgreifen, da ich auch keine Zeit mehr zum rumtesten hatte.

Anschließend habe ich es nochmal versucht und offenbar klappt es, wenn zuvor pulseaudio gestartet wird (per default nutzt Firefox bei mir OSS und Chromium sndio, aber damit klappt es wohl nicht).

So, das Paket ist doch schon heute angekommen. Ist ein Thinkpad X260 - das hab ich günstig bekommen und mir geholt für Experimente mit #BSD. Ich hatte die letzte Woche schon mit #NetBSD auf einem Uralt-Teil rumgespielt.

Auf dem x260 war die Erfahrung mit NetBSD (11.0 RC6) aber ernüchternd. Langsam, Grafikprobleme und Firefox stürzte ab. Videomeetings (BBB) gingen gar nicht. NetBSD als Daily Driver kann man damit vergessen. Der Einsatzzweck dieses Systems ist beschränkt auf exotische oder alte oder sehr begrenzte Hardware.

Nun kommt #FreeBSD dran. Obwohl die Thinkpads zu den am besten unterstützten Geräten zählen musste erstmal gebastelt werden um die Umschaltung Headphones/Speaker hinzubekommen, siehe https://xyinn.org/md/freebsd/thinkpad_x260 - die nächsten Tage werd ich exklusiv dieses Gerät benutzen

Die Standardversion von #Python im #FreeBSD Ports-Tree wurde auf 3.12 aktualisiert und es stehen neue py312-*-Pakete zur Verfügung.

New on the blog: my Home Assistant setup on FreeBSD.

Home Assistant OS runs in a bhyve VM, but bhyve has no USB passthrough, so Zigbee2MQTT and Mosquitto live in a VNET jail with the ConBee II.

Homematic comes in via a CCU3, and three IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices use my Nanoleaf Shapes controller as their border router.

Three radio ecosystems, 474 entities, one dashboard.

FreeBSD 15.1 on ThinkPad T480 impression after 2 weeks on the new release:

- Stable 5 GHz WiFi with several hundreds Mbps (native iwlwifi driver)

- Hardware Video acceleration working in Chromium (via libva-intel-media-driver)

- Factorio running absolutely stable with 60FPS

Battery life after powerd optimizations: decent. Way over 6h (with dual batteries)

Noteworthy:
Sound is working perfectly via pulseaudio
Webcam works perfectly via webcamd
WiFi, Ethernet and Docking works flawless
Virtualization via BHYVE working out of the box.

This is a perfectly usable setup! I don't currently miss anything.
